Timing is key when it comes to getting essentials and splurges at the best prices. Knowing when seasonal items are likely to go on sale and when there are big sales can help you buy what you want, but for significantly less.
In 2023, retailers are likely to hold regular sales events, and the season still influences which products are sold and when. If you don’t want to shop in person, online shopping and curbside pickup give you plenty of ways to buy the deals you find in stores.

January
Things to buy:
— Winter clothes. Come late January, retailers will move heavy coats, sweatshirts, warm pajamas, winter boots, sweaters, hats and scarves onto sales racks to make way for spring fashion. Up to 50% off winter apparel. Discounts will continue to be available in February, but inventory may be reduced as retailers destock new winter items. So January is prime time for winter apparel shopping.
— linens and towels. Department stores and home goods retailers such as Kohl’s, Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond and Pottery Barn traditionally run “white sales” of bath products and bedding throughout January. Although stores no longer use this exact term (it’s a more traditional name that was coined decades ago), sales of towels and sheets have steadily increased each year.
— tv set. The lead up to the Super Bowl is one of the best times to buy a TV. Super Bowl LVII takes place on February 12th, so be sure to check out the deals at your favorite electronics, big box, and warehouse club stores during the last few weeks of January.
Important Sale Dates:
— New Year’s Day. You wouldn’t expect many stores to have New Year’s sales. After all, consumers are pretty leveraged. But Amazon, Target, Walmart, and other big retailers tend to hold New Year’s sales with big discounts. After all, you need to clear the shelves of your store or warehouse so that you can sell new items.
— Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Expect sales on clothing, beauty and home goods during the long weekend.
February
Things to buy:
— tax software. The IRS deadline for employers to send W-2s is January 31. February is therefore the time when tax software companies like H&R Block and TurboTax start offering promo codes and discounts for early filers.
— jewelry. Wait until right after Valentine’s Day to put your leftover jewelry up for sale.
Important Sale Dates:
— President’s Day. Get great deals on mattresses and appliances for the long weekend.

— Household goods and appliances. Thanks to spring cleaning motivation and Earth Day, everything from vacuum cleaners to energy-efficient appliances is on sale.

Important Sale Dates:
— Easter. Shops will be quiet on Easter Sunday (some will be closed), but sales will fill the lead-up period. Department stores offer discounts on spring outfits, and gift sites sell baskets and flowers. In addition, Easter candies and baskets are sold just after the holidays.
