The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, today released the Apple Lisa source code, including system and application software. Today just so happens to be his 40th anniversary since his Apple Lisa was first released on January 19, 1983.
The Apple Lisa for business users was priced at nearly $10,000 at launch. The high price, combined with software problems and floppy disk problems, resulted in a commercial failure. Although largely replaced in just two years by the much more affordable Apple Macintosh and Lisa 2, the Apple Lisa is known for its innovative use of the graphical user interface (GUI).
Apple Lisa included several apps, including a word processor, spreadsheets, and charts, all bundled with the system. The GUI was inspired by his Smalltalk system at Xerox PARC, but had its own innovations that would ultimately influence Apple’s future operating systems and Microsoft’s Windows software.
Those interested in downloading the Apple Lisa code can do so from the Computer History Museum website.
This code has been released as part of the ongoing “Art of Code” series at the Computer History Museum. This series examines past code releases that drove important advances in computing. A hybrid in-person and online event will be held on January 31st at 7 PM PST. The event will mark Apple’s journey to PCs and shed light on why Lisa has become the company’s “most important flop.”
