Not Your Average Coupon
Suzan Berro wasn’t your average “coupon issuer” clipping manufacturer coupons to save a few bucks on groceries.
Bello worked as a medical biller at multiple pharmacies, and she had been working on the plan for nearly a year, officials said.
The 23-year-old man was convicted by a federal jury of charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud related to the scheme, and has paid pharmaceutical companies more than $65 million through out-of-pocket assistance programs. charged.
Bello allegedly created fake prescriptions for fake patients and combined them with the names and credentials of real doctors. Prescriptions were usually high-end, expensive medicinals, and patient names and addresses were curated from real estate listings.
Officials told Detroit’s WDIV-TV that Berro goes to great lengths to make its patient profiles look realistic, and to ensure that fake patients and pharmacies are geographically close.
Bello was the mastermind of a conspirator who allegedly filed fraudulent claims with more than 40 pharmacies, most of which only existed on paper.
U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison says it will take a long time to fully unravel Bello’s plans.
“This was a complex scheme that exploited dozens of established programs to help people who could not legally afford drugs,” said Ison. “Our office will continue to investigate and unravel these schemes and will vigorously pursue those responsible.”
