Suffolk, Virginia – It doesn’t take long to buy things online these days. A quick swipe on your phone or computer and a box will appear on your door in a few days.
It may seem like magic, but there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make it all happen.
Problem Solver Erin Miller visited Amazon’s new Robotic Fulfillment Center in Suffolk to see how orders are progressing during the busy season and what deals are available starting today.
ORF3 General Manager Gregory Lum described the facility’s “inbound process.”
“When a customer places an order and clicks ‘buy,’ the order is immediately sent to a facility like this,” he said.
Products are transported from the Port of Virginia, brought into the building, and stored in yellow robotic pods.
There is no physical strain as the machine does the ‘heavy lifting’ for the employee. Instead, employees spend time and energy sorting small items from pods into bins before boxing them up.
“The ‘robots’ allow our employees to focus on doing their job safely and focusing on the customer experience without having to lift. We can hire them to deliver more smiles,” said Lam.
Having a large inventory is also one of the reasons why the product arrives at your door quickly.
“We expect a significant increase in customer orders this year,” Lum said. “This is kind of the busiest time of the year for retail and we really plan to make sure we can reach customers across Hampton Roads safely and with really great quality and efficiency. .”
Lam said the facility ships about 200,000 parcels each day, and is expected to reach nearly 1 million during the peak holiday season.
As a conveyor belt moves through ORF3, so does online trading.
“This year’s Cyber Monday is expected to be a huge event,” said Emily Hawkins.
Emily Hawkins works at Amazon and shares her holiday deals.
“I’m especially excited about this Oral-B electric toothbrush and it’s time to upgrade mommy, so for Cyber Monday, this Oral-B toothbrush is up to 30% off,” said Hawkins. rice field.
She said Ray-Ban and Ring Security are just a few brands with up to 30% and 40% off.
“Another little-known fact is that over 50% of the merchandise purchased during the holiday season comes from small businesses,” says Hawkins.
Amazon shared these deals with News3.
