A 78-year-old Victorian woman is disappointed after Victoria’s yellow cabs decided not to accept Taxi Saver vouchers.
Carol Brown has been using coupons for about 10 years and often takes taxis to get to the clinic.
Permanently registered handyDART riders can use coupons to subsidize 50% of taxi fares.
“If HandyDART can’t handle it and we have a reservation, we have no choice but to take a taxi,” says Brown.
HandyDART is an accessible shared transportation service for people with disabilities.
“It takes half a day to get on the HandyDART,” says Brown. “You have to book two weeks in advance. They are so great. It just takes time.”
Brown has had two hip replacements and uses a walker. She says Taxi Saver her coupons are a “lifeline” for people with disabilities in the community.
“Taxi Saver vouchers are invaluable.”
Victoria’s yellow cab decision went into effect on 1 January.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Infrastructure said: “We are aware that Yellow Cabs in Victoria have informed BC Transit that they will no longer be accepting Taxi Saver Coupons.” “In Victoria, Bluebird He understands that other taxi companies such as Cabs, Sydney Taxi, Victoria Taxi, West Shore Taxi and West Wind Taxi also participate in BC Transit’s programme.”
Brown says he has no car and no one to give him a ride.
“If you were financially destitute and couldn’t afford a taxi, you would get stuck,” she said. “HandyDART is my only transportation.”
Yellow Cabs in Victoria did not respond to a request for comment.
