COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Wisconsin) – The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has responded to reports of a man brandishing a pocket knife at a Walmart on Two Notch Road.
Officials said the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
A Walmart witness told agents the man was brandishing a pocket knife and threatening employees and shoppers in the self-checkout area.
Those in the store attempted to calm and subdue the man before deputies arrived on the scene.
One shopper and veteran, DeMario Davis, was caught on video, forcing a man to hit him on the head and drop a knife.
“Me and my son were in the back, but he was like if the cops got here they would start chopping people up. So this one guy was like, yeah you need to get out and He put the knife in the man’s face and started swinging it and if you see him swinging then I’m a veteran and in basic training for that kind of situation that kind of thing “I know you’re training ,” Davis said.
Davis says he held the man back until Richland County lawmakers responded.
“My first instinct was to neutralize the situation, so I guess I caught them by just walking casually and waiting until I had the chance to catch him. I want people in the community to step up as well when they see something not right in a community where violence is going on.Police can’t do everything alone.”
When deputies arrived on the scene, the RCSD’s crisis intervention team evaluated the man and decided to take him to a local hospital for evaluation.
No charges have been filed at this time.
