BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — An armed man has been arrested for being deemed a “serious violent offender” by police after he got into a fight with another person inside a Walmart in Indiana and fled police.
At about 7:20 p.m. Monday, a representative from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department was called to a Walmart store on State Route 45 in Bloomington to investigate the brawl going on inside.
Upon arrival, authorities saw Matthew Wall walking out of the store with his face bleeding, consistent with the suspect’s description. Lawmakers ordered Wall to stop walking and had him place his hand on a nearby car, according to MCSD.
Initially, the 29-year-old man followed police. However, when authorities tried to handcuff him to Wall, he fled on foot.
According to MCSD, agents tracked down Wall and were able to successfully detain him.
After being taken into custody, police identified Wall as a “serious violent criminal” and searched him. MCSD said they found him in possession of his 9 mm pistol, two magazines, and his 28 rounds of ammunition.
Police then took Wall to a local hospital to treat injuries sustained during a brawl inside a Walmart. Multiple deputies involved in the arrest also suffered minor hand injuries while wrestling on the asphalt, according to MCSD.
Through eyewitness testimony and security camera footage, investigators can determine that Wall and an unknown man entered a Walmart with “two small children” and immediately “engaged in a physical altercation.” was completed.
After being discharged from the hospital, Wall was taken to the Monroe County Correctional Center and is being held on charges of:
- Possession of a firearm by a serious violent offender – level 4 felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement – Level 6 Felonies
- Reckless Crime – Level 6 Felony
- Battery – Class B Misdemeanor
MCSD agents, along with the Bloomington Police Department, attempted to locate another man seen fighting Wall in security footage.
“But he left before we arrived,” MCSD wrote in a Facebook post.
