Detroit may no longer be just a “313” country when it comes to area codes.
The Michigan Public Service Commission is considering adding a second area code to Metro Detroit as the “313” phone number is projected to be exhausted by the third quarter of 2025. I’m here. The new area code will be “679”.
The MPSC will hold a hearing on this topic on March 9 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Frank Hayden Community Room #236, 1001 W. Fort St., Downtown Detroit Campus, Wayne County Community College District. To do. Present, ask questions and comment on potential changes.
New ‘679’ area code is same as ‘313’ code including Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Echoes, Gros Pointes, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township covers the region. River Rouge and Taylor.
If the area code is “313”, you do not need to change the number.
However, if the area has two area codes, people in that area will not be able to dial 7 digits for local calls. A full 10-digit number is required to make a call.
Some equipment may need to be reprogrammed if it does not contain the full 10-digit number, such as auto-dial equipment, medical equipment, and home security systems.
The MPSC expects to make a final decision on this matter by May 31st. The MPSC then plans to implement the changes over a period of 19 months.
Citizens are encouraged to submit comments on this matter by 5:00 p.m. You may also submit your comments in writing.
According to an MPSC news release, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), which handles phone numbers within the United States, has applied for this new metropolitan Detroit area code in November 2022.
This change was first requested in 2000. But changes in federal policy and “conservation numbering” have delayed his need for a second area code in the Detroit area until now.
The “313” area code is adopted by Detroit, and the city celebrates “313 Days” every March 13th. Eminem also has a song called “313” that mentions Detroit.
