A newborn boy is “fighting for his life” after his mother was shot dead by a man arrested outside an Amazon warehouse in Lakeville.
Kayla O’Neal, 31, was shot around 6:50 p.m. Sunday while sitting in her car in the parking lot of the Amazon Fulfillment Center on the 9800 block of West 217th Street, police said.
O’Neill was taken to Ho Chi Minh City by emergency medical responders, where he died. According to police, medical personnel there were able to deliver the baby on Sunday night.
The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Minneapolis, was arrested shortly after 1:15 a.m. Monday morning on suspicion of second-degree manslaughter and jailed. He has not yet been charged. The Star Tribune typically does not identify suspects before they are indicted.
Police said in a statement that the man had an “employment relationship” with the warehouse.
O’Neal’s survivors include children ages 10, 7 and 2. [who] I was forced to give birth, but I am fighting for his life,” his sister Samantha Scott said during an online fundraising campaign to help cover funeral costs.
Police have yet to reveal a possible motive for the shooting. According to Scott’s post, the man is the father of at least one of O’Neill’s children.
