The code yellow precautionary measure for Poplar Road Elementary School has been lifted, school officials said.
Per the school system’s safety protocols, Coweta County 911 told Poplar Road Administration at approximately 10:45 a.m. Thursday that law enforcement is looking for a suspect who fled from officers about to serve a warrant in a nearby neighborhood. After that, Code Yellow started.
A social media post about the incident took some parents and community members by surprise Thursday morning, but school officials said the measure was a frequently used precaution.
Code Yellow lockdowns usually pose no immediate danger to the campus or building, but the situation (in this case, police activity near the school) forces staff and students to remain in place until the situation is resolved. It means that there is a need.
Law enforcement issued all clears around noon, and Poplar Road unlocked the code.
In a letter about the incident sent to families on Thursday, principal Leslie Goodwin said code yellow was a general precautionary measure and that education and school operations continued with little interruption.
“Otherwise, police activity was never directly involved in our school,” she said.
Goodwin said safety remains Poplar Road’s top priority.
“We will continue to use safety procedures to maintain a safe learning environment,” she said.
