WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Many shelves remained empty at an H Street Walmart on Tuesday, even though managers said they would restock the store the day before.
So shoppers scrambled to find what was left from the refrigerator, meat, poultry, dairy, and produce sections.
“My favorite ice cream is bananas,” said Deborah Anderson, who managed to salvage several items from her grocery list.
A Walmart spokesperson blamed the shortage on a broken refrigerator. After the issue was resolved, those shelves were cold, but still empty.
“I like bread, dairy and water, so it’s very bad,” Anderson said.
Others have also found themselves facing shortages of staple foods.
“Vegetables and stuff like that,” said Terry Smith.
Walmart is one of the world’s largest retailers, but the shopping experience in recent weeks has not been what customers typically experience.
“It was like Walmart,” said Smith. “But when I went inside, there was nothing there.”
Managers said a large shipment is expected to arrive late Tuesday night.
“We found what we got,” said Anderson. “So I think I was a little satisfied.”
Customers told DC News Now that even if they could shop at other nearby grocery stores, those would be more expensive than Walmart.
