the boys
I’m all for social media beef between megacorps. And this time, Amazon is waging comedy wars through proxies… fictional megacorporations, Vought Internationalthe evil conglomerate of The Boys.
Vought has no direct real-life analogue, but it does have fingers in every pie in the universe. It was making fun of media integration by saying it would be Vought++.
But now? There’s another joke they’re making. This time it’s directly to the cost of Warner Bros. Discover and HBO Max.
“As we kick off 2023, we are proud to announce the most effective reimagining in the history of entertainment. Vought++ is Vought+ again! We’ve eliminated 35% of movies, all on top of the $119/month price for a new low!”
Since the merger, WB/HBO Max has not only canceled series and removed completed projects like the Batgirl movie, but its library, dozens of movies, and even recent shows like Raised by Wolves We are actively removing content from. Westworld to take tax write-downs and avoid royalty payments. It’s a bit of an unprecedented situation in the streaming age. All the while, the subscription price hasn’t been lowered.
As another streaming service, is Amazon really in a position to make fun of this? Of all the major streaming services, Amazon probably pulls the least amount of shenanigans when it comes to shocking cancellations. Also, I haven’t heard of anything like scrapping green-lighted future seasons or removing content from their library entirely. Yeah, they have a license to dive into HBO Max here. Because this practice is atrocious and sacrifices creative work in a brutal way for the ultimate benefit. Creators and viewers cannot thrive while such practices are standardized.
Amazon, on the other hand, still struggles to find truly major hits on the HBO and Netflix levels, but has recently found some success with The Boys, Reacher, and The Terminal List. Lord of the Rings: Ring of Power was at least widely seen, if not terribly loved.
As for The Boys, its spin-off, Generation V, is slated for release in 2023, with filming wrapped this fall.
